Maria’s doors

Maria Provinciali from our style office has a thing for doors. Armed always with a camera to capture the most interesting exemplars, she’s not attracted to the doors most tourists photograph.

See beyond the streets and buildings: Doors tell a story, a story of the past, the transformation of time. They as a question: What lies beyond?

Colour, sometimes inviting, drawing you in. At other times vague remnants of past colour, faded by the sun.

Shapes and context, often unusual; doors above doors, doors and stairs, illogical openings.

Maria has a particular interest in texture, with an appreciation for the chipped, weathered wood that can only happen with age. Italy provides many doors of this type for her inspiration.

These photos were taken on Tuscan island of Capraia, in the ancient Matera and nearby province of Basilicata, at romantic waterlogged Venice and at the lesser known Sperlonga.
